Detroit and Lansing theatre groups join forces, share stage

The Detroit based Plowshares Theatre Company in collaboration with the Lansing BoarsHead Theatre group presents The Story, by Tracey Scott Wilson, through Saturday, March 12, 2005 at the BoarsHead Theatre, 425 South Grand Ave., (across from the CATA bus station).

Yvonne, the lead character, is an ambitious reporter hired by a major city newspaper for its Outlook section, but she feels her assignments will never get her promoted to the Metro, or National section. Looking for the right story to elevate herself, Yvonne reports the case of a White man murdered in a "bad" neighborhood. Thus, the fine line between a good story, and a true story in the American media is explored in this fast paced production.

The Story has some interesting twists with special effects, and a wonderful cast playing their parts tongue in cheek, with a touch of drama. Yvonne (Casaundra Freeman) the lead character is riveting as she brings you into her perception of race. Jeff (Jason Richards), Yvonne's boyfriend is drawn into her web, while Neil (Rico Bruce Wade), her coworker can't wait to uncover what he believes Yvonne is all about. Latisha (Ginneh Thomas has appeared in Michigan State University productions of For Colored Girls Who Have Considered Suicide When The Rainbow Is Enuf, A Raisin In The Sun, has been a BoarsHead intern, has a scholarship from SMU, and is working toward her Actors' Equity points), gives Yvonne the run of her career! Most of the thespians are from the Plowshares Theatre Company.

Playwright, Tracey Scott Wilson was a recipient of the 2002 Helen Merrill Award for Emerging Artists and The Story was a finalist for the 2002 Susan Smith Blackburn Prize. Wilson was also a 1998 Van Lier Fellow at the New York Theatre Workshop. Wilson was born and raised in Newark, New Jersey. She received a B.A. from Rutgers University and an M.A. from Temple University.
