Sherri's
Floral and Gifts grows business
by Ryan Menefee
Sherri's Floral and Gifts is the
product of inspiration and perspiration. Several years ago, Sherri
Henderson was inspired by her pastor Larry Trice, Sr. to start
a flower arrangement business. Pastor Trice preached a sermon
entitled "What you need is in the house." Henderson
immediately knew that whatever she wanted she could have with
hard work. Henderson took the message to heart and began selling
silk arrangements and center pieces out of her basement. Henderson's
flowers were so well arranged they became sought after for weddings
and bridal shows throughout the area. In 1999, Henderson branched
out and established Sherri's Floral and Gifts at the Lansing City
Market. Watered by continued community support, Sherri's Floral
and Gifts continued to bloom and in the summer of 2002, moved
to 5735 S. Cedar in Lansing. Henderson is a woman with a vision.
She has set goals for her business that will continue to bless
the community as well as her business. Sherri's Floral and Gifts
is one of the few African American owned flower boutiques in the
entire nation. Henderson strives to be well known and respected
while encouraging other minorities to do the same.

Henderson's has words
of encouragement for anyone considering starting their
own business. "Research your industry first,
regardless of the field. By digging into the market
you will know exactly what you need to do to be successful.
Always compare your business to other merchants. Flowers
are like seafood," she says, "There is ongoing
research that can be done everywhere."
Not only is Henderson
a successful florist, but she is also very active
in the community.
