Health Notes WHY GENERIC MEDICATIONS? Many of us still insist on purchasing 'brand-name' drugs because they have been around a long time and it is sort of a ritual that has been passed from generation to generation which is similar to unhealthy eating habits which will be discussed in a future column. Generic medications work exactly the same as brand-name drugs. They have to because the Food & Drug Administration (FDA) tests every drug before it is put on the market. The only real difference between generics and brand-name drugs is price. One can purchase generics for anywhere between 20% and 40% less than brand-name medications. That's quite a savings, especially for those who have limited incomes. The average citizen is swayed by the size, shape and color of their drugs. Drug companies know this and market accordingly, but it's what's inside the pill that counts which means you should ask if a generic form is available. That's not only healthy for you - it saves money. To find out more out more about medications and find about about medical conditions contact the AARP Health Guide website (aarp/health/healthguide).
