GOT MILK???
Previous columns discussed the effect that milk and other calcium laden nutrients have on the digestive system of African Americans. Also discussed was how to ingest the minimum dairy requirements without suffering from the effects of lactose intolerance.
This column will focus on evidence of dairy nutrients and associated health benefits. Below is a brief overview of six vitamins and minerals that are essential to your healthy being and that on all connected to dairy nutrients.
• Calcium. A deficiency of calcium has been associated with colon cancer,
high blood pressure, and osteoporosis. Some researchers are collecting evidence that calcium consumed in dairy products has significant implications on weight loss management (Zemel MB, et al. Obseity Research. 2004; Parikh SJ, 2003).
• Vitamin D is critical for building bone. Vitamin D helps the body
absorb and retain calcium and phosphorus. Laboratory studies also show
that vitamin D keeps cancer cells from growing and dividing.
• Whey Protein. New research suggests that whey-deruved bioactive components can build up the bodies immune system and help protect against cancer and heart disease.
• Magnesium helps to reduce elevated blood pressure by relaxing the muscles that control blood vessels and by allowing the blood to flow more freely.
• Potassium helps to regulate blood pressure. It also plays a big role in providing normal muscle contraction and transmission of nerve impulses. Potassium deficiency can result heart problems, weakness, glucose intolerance and increased blood pressure. It may also be associated with the increased risk for stroke.
• Phosphorus forms proteins, aids with proper digestion of minerals and vitamins, and assists the kidneys in effectively excreting wastes. It is also essential for stimulating hormone production.
This concludes the series on dairy and dairy nutrients in the diet of African Americans. If you have questions about the amount of dairy nutrients in your diet you should contact your physician for more information.
