The book, “Wilderness
in the Mind: Trilogy of African Poetry Episode 1,
Reincarnting” tells of Amushie ‘s African
heritage and homeland Nigeria. In his writings, Amushie
also tells of his experiences in Europe and America.
An accomplished writer,
Amushie, has had two other books published in Italian
while he was in Italy. Those works include “II
Canto.della Regina Nera” (Songs from the Black
Queen) Poetry (1994), “La Tartaruga Re’degli
Animali” (Turtle King of the Animals) (1995).
Amushie went to Italy
at the age of 19 to study at Pontifical University
where he earned a Master’s degree in Law. A
wearer of many hats, because it is difficult for him
to say no, Amushie continues to write about his life
experiences. Other works include plays: “Ome
Ihe Jide Offor” (You must have a reason to act)
for Pan Africa Theatre Modena Italy 1994/1995, “II
Treno” (The Train) for Association C.I.E.S.E.
of Ferrara Italy 1992/1994.
The west African writer
has read poetry all over America and Europe. And,
since Amushie has been in Lansing, he has participated
in many art influenced community events offering his
time and talents in and around town. Amushie prides
himself of speaking the truth regarding his homeland
of Nigeria. He said that most of the time, stories
of Africa are told by other people. Some true, some
not so true.
The Wilderness in the
Mind: Trilogy was inspired by Amushie’s need
to find authentic African references to model his
life after, and he hopes it helps others as well.
This is because when Amushie first went to Italy,
he didn’t see many people who looked like him.
Thus, writing became way of expressing himself and
a way of sharing what he represented. Amushie is friendly
and warm. He is a dedicated family man. His book is
now available in local bookstores. We will continue
to wish him well as he conquers new horizons.
