MSU football coach names four
African American captains Michigan State University head football coach John L. Smith and his coaching staff appointed four African Americans captains for the 2004 season. The quartet are junior wide receiver, Kyle Brown; senior bandit, Tyrell Dortch; senior free safety, Jason Harmon; and senior linebacker, Ronald Stanley. It is the second season as captain for Stanley, who joins a rather exclusive club. Only five other Spartans have served more than one year as captain. The last player to do so was Lansing linebacker, Josh Thornhill who captained the 2000 and 2001 squads.
